The aim of the mathematics department is to ensure that every pupil is given the opportunity to fulfil their potential and achieve their personal best.

In the mathematics department we follow a curriculum that is closely linked to the British National Curriculum.

In Key Stage 3, (years 7, 8 and 9) we provide a rigorous course that enables the students to be ready for the British International Curriculum exams. Pupils are set according to their ability and after each topic has been completed, students are assessed with a topic test.

In years 10 and 11, the department follows the Cambridge I.G.C.S.E. syllabus. However given the standards that have been achieved in the department and the performance of some the pupils, Fast Track groups complete IGCSE course over year 9 and 10.

We also offer the Edexcel GCE AS and A2 course, which is made up of six modules split over two years. The pupils can study for the AS and then convert it to the full A level when they have completed the extra modules. The modules for AS are: Core Mathematics 1, Core Mathematics 2 and Mechanics 1. For the A2, pupils study Core Mathematics 3,Core Mathematics 4 and Statistics 1. The level of assessment is the same as for the other year groups, although the emphasis is more on University style lectures and the pupils taking responsibility for their own progress. We believe that this prepares them for the change from school to university and the expectations that will be required.

The mathematics department at GES has continued to be a strong and progressive department where pupils are expected to work very hard and achieve their personal best. Results have continued to improve each year and this is due to the dedication of the staff and students.
